Local Government representatives from areas in Australia that have been battered by floods and bushfires have joined forces to demand oil and gas producers pay more tax.
Thirty-seven mayors and councillors have put their names to an open letter to the Federal Government, calling for extra revenue to go to local councils to pay for the impacts of climate change.
Signatories include Southern Mallee Mayor Ron Valentine, Mitcham Mayor Heather Holmes Ross, and Adelaide Hills Councillors Melanie Selwood and Leith Mudge.
The call comes as a Senate Inquiry report is expected to be released today on the government’s proposed reforms to the petroleum resource rent tax (PRRT) .
