A vintage clothes shop in Nairne is about to move to the city after operating in the Adelaide Hills for seven years.

Little Ms Waste-Not has its last day of trading this Sunday 16 June before moving to Rundle Street.

Owner Sophie Rose has told us that a new housing development is going up behind her shop, which has prompted the move.

“These are townhouses behind, they’ll be demolishing the garden that everyone knows as my sale garden and they’ll be demolishing a little house. It’s about 18 months’ worth of building and destruction around me, which of course will affect the business, so yeah we’ve had to look at other spaces,” she told ARN’s Jennie Lenman and Adam Connelly.

Sophie, who hails from the Adelaide Hills, said she would have loved to stay in the region but has not been able to find any viable spaces to rent.

“My family’s been up here for 35-plus years, we didn’t want to go anywhere else but the rents in the Adelaide Hills are ridiculous and I tell you what when I can get a space in the centre of Rundle Street, in the fashion district, for less rent than I can get in the Adelaide Hills, I think we might have a problem for small business up here.”

Ethical and sustainable vintage fashion is at the heart of the business, with Sophie moving from a career in social work for 23 years to open the shop.

“I’ve been collecting vintage fashion since my grandmother gave me a fur stole at 12, which was my great-grandmothers, and it has been so important to be able to carry on to a new field, a creative field that still has an ethical foundation, because we really do have some issues with our fashion industry.”

The fashion industry is one of the highest polluting industries and is responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions, on average.
