The Mount Barker Council has asked the ratepayers who are furious about a plan to chop down 27 World War One Memorial trees to get in touch with the State Government instead.

The surprise Facebook announcement on Australia Day was flooded with comments from angry locals who still cherish the ash trees despite the RSL decommissioning the avenue 12 years ago, moving the memorial to a nearby park.

The removal of the trees will open up more driving space on Wellington Rd, where the new $320 million Hospital is being built.

Replying to Facebook comments, council’s urged people to instead direct their complaints to the transport department, saying it was only made aware of the works late on Friday afternoon.
