A local larrikin who made national news in 2023 for a Google Maps stunt in Meningie has died following health complications.

Smiley Woolger died last Tuesday 18 February. The father, brother, son and cousin is being remembered as a very helpful member of the community who would often help people, friends and strangers alike, by fixing their cars.

Well known for his speedway skills in the local Murray Bridge demolition derby scene, he has also given people a laugh by creating a scene on Google Street View by chasing his mate Bruce down the street wielding an axe.

In January 2024, Woolger told Yahoo News Australia that the stunt was spur of the moment after he saw the Google Street View car approaching.

His friend Christopher Thompson has set up a GoFundMe page to support the family with almost $2,000 raised out of a $5,000 goal as of Thursday morning.

“He loved his kids and would do anything to help and protect them and same for his partner Eerin,” Christopher Thompson wrote on the Go Fund Me Page.

“Now it time to show how much we appreciated all the work and help he gave by helping Eerin out with some funds for their home mortgage, bills and some of the costs of his funeral.”

Thompson said Woolger was not just there for his family but for the whole community.

“He would help strangers that got bogged anywhere he went, he fixed people’s cars at home, their houses or even on the side of the road. No matter what he was there to help,” Thompson said.
