Zoos SA has raised $2.025 million dollars in just 28 days for its bid to bring three Asian Elephants to Monarto Safari Park, thanks to 4,339 donors.
“We’ve done it. They’re coming!” Elaine Bensted, CE of Zoos SA said this morning.
“We’ve had kids handing over their pocket money to some very large donations including the $1 million. Every single one of these donations counts and means so much.
“I can’t wait for you to see these three beautiful animals at Monarto Safari Park in 2024/25,” said Bensted.
Burma from Auckland Zoo, and Permai and Putra Mas from Perth Zoo are training to used to their crates for travel to South Australia in the next 12-18 months.
The three Asian Elephants will become founders of a South Australian herd where they will roam at Monarto Safari Park, the largest open-range safari in the region, in a new habitat that meets their complex social structure needs.
While the goal has been reached, Zoos SA is still calling on people to continue fundraising and taking part in the Run Wild event on 21 October.
All funds raised over this amount will still go to the elephants’ project according to Zoos SA.
The Run Wild event at Monarto Safari Park will take place on 21 October 2023. The event will see fundraisers run, walk or wheel Monarto Safari Park’s tracks, covering a distance of 3km, 10km, 20km, 40km or a virtual distance.
