The inaugural We Care Cally Camp Out has been deemed a success.

The event on Friday 21 June attracted more than 500 people for a night under the stars, with 80 bringing their swags and campers to stay overnight.

The event and online auction raised almost twice the original goal, with a total sum of $185,000 generated for organisations supporting homelessness in the region.

A $100,000 cheque was handed to the team at ac.care in the Murraylands on the night, a $65,000 cheque was given to Catherine House and two $10,000 cheques were handed over to Fred’s Van and the Murraylands Salvation Army.

The initiative was spearheaded by Monarto-based company Australian Portable Camps, with Frank and Gino Martino keen to give back to the community and those doing it tough.

Kristy Fitzgerald from the organisation said thanks to the help and generosity of many, the event went very well, with fireworks, live entertainment, activities and a bonfire keeping attendees warm and entertained.

“We had people supporting us from all over Australia. The local community and the local businesses have all pooled together and enabled this to come off and be such a success, so onwards and upwards, and bigger and better,” Kristy Fitzgerald told ARN’s Adam Connelly and Jennie Lenman this morning.

Asked whether the event will be back on next year, Kristy said, “watch this space.”
