Murray Bridge East ratepayers are being encouraged to weigh in on a proposal for a new waste water management scheme.
The Rural City of Murray Bridge (RCMB) has released a detailed design for a proposed community wastewater system, which would include a network of pipes and pumping stations to move waste from individual properties to a Tooma Drive treatment site off the Karoonda Highway.
The move comes after RCMB identified a significant number of onsite wastewater systems in the area were either failing or in poor condition, posing potential public health and environmental risks.
The LGA has offered to contribute $13M of the $20M cost for the infrastructure.
Council CEO Heather Barclay says under the proposal, landowners may have to contribute around $8,000 each for the connection fee, which she says is a much smaller sum than the ‘$35,000 to $40,0000’ it costs for brand new systems for individual properties.
“If it was to go ahead it is not something that would happen quickly, there could absolutely be payment plans, yes if a service went past a property those properties would be required in time to come on board and connect, but it could be four to eight years before properties connect,” Heather Barclay told ARN’s Adam Connelly and Jennie Lenman.
About 500 people turned out to two sessions on Tuesday, September 10, and it is anticipated there will be a forum held on the issue in future.
