A new cherry farm opens this weekend in Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills.

Unlikely farmers, Registered Nurses Chris and Emily Shipway, are opening their second pick your own orchard, following the success of their apple farm in 2022.

Birdwood Pick Your Own Cherries has its Grand Opening on Saturday and Sunday 7th and 8th of December, from 10am to 4pm, offering an onsite café, activities and a great atmosphere for visitors.

Mum of three, Emily Shipway, has been recognised with a 2024 Agritourism Business of the Year Award and has recently been consulting with the State Government on enhancing the local sector.

She has told ARN’s Adam and Jennie that she is excited about the prospect.

“An opportunity came up, we took it because that’s what we do and we’re just taking what we do with apples… We’ll shake up the pick your own cherry industry like we have with apples,” Emily Shipway said to ARN’s Adam and Jennie.

“We’re trying to make it more like the American market, so America do things big and awesome, and that’s what we’ve based our experiences on, really good at entertaining and providing fun and that’s what we’re trying to do, so we’re not [just] providing an experience, we’re providing an atmosphere.”
