Murray Bridge High School is raising funds to get some of their brightest minds over to Sydney for a national robotic competition.
Three teams have all qualified for next weekend’s FIRST Tech Challenge at Macquarie University after a successful state competition for the Murray Bridge Bunyips, Murray Bridge Mulyawonks and Murray Bridge Lizards (pictured above).
The Bunyips qualified in two ways by being the first Alliance pick and the 1st placed Inspire Award winners, helping all three teams qualify. The Lizards won 2nd place for the Inspire Award and earnt their spot themselves.
Bunyips team member Lucas Bubner wrote code for his team’s technology, which has been ranked 219th globally out of around 3,500 teams.
He said he’s hoping to make it to the international competition next year.
“If we are successful we head over to the world championships in Texas… there’s about four spots for Australia,” Lucas told ARN’s Craig Pitman and Katie Wright on Wednesday.
His teammate Kiera Stavast says it has been a rewarding experience.
“Some of the skills that we’re developing, like confidence and working as a team and communication, are really important for the future,” Kiera told Craig and Katie.
Along with being top 300 globally, the Bunyips are currently ranked 4th in Australia, and 2nd for Australia Autonomous scoring.
