Permai has arrived at Monarto Safari Park after travelling across the Nullabor from Perth Zoo.

The Asian elephant’s journey to Monarto Safari Park has been meticulously planned and has travelled in a custom-built air-conditioned, fully insulated transport crate with up to 1,000 litres of water and plenty of snacks.

A team of veterinarians and expert keeping staff have been with the 35-year-old elephant, closely monitoring her throughout the entire journey.

She arrived after 11am this morning and is now spending some time getting comfortable with her surroundings before venturing out onto habitat.

She will soon be introduced to the park’s other Asian elephant, Burma, who recently moved from Auckland Zoo. Then in March, Sydney’s Taraonga Zoo will send over Tang Mo and Pak Boon to join the herd.

The fifth and final elephant to join Monarto Safari Park, Putra Mas, will make his journey from Perth Zoo sometime between mid-late 2025.
