The popular Horseshoe Bay pontoon can now stay in the water all year round.

On Monday Alexandrina Councillors unanimously voted in favour of a charitable financial offer from Finniss MP David Basham to keep the Port Elliot structure afloat, along with an offer of in-kind maintenance support from Goolwa Jetty Builders.

The flotation device washed ashore in stormy weather on the weekend of 14 and 15 September 2024 after the mooring came loose.

Following campaigning from community groups to get it back, including the Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club and Port Elliot Town and Foreshore Improvement Association, Alexandrina Council held several meetings to find a solution, with concerns about liability and running costs.

Estimates came in at approximately $180,000 per year, which prompted Council and the community to seek alternative options.

Now under a new plan, the pontoon will be licensable by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport.
