South Australia is welcoming a jet-setting elephant today with the first of five Asian elephants arriving at Monarto Safari Park.
Burma is flying from Auckland Zoo and will eventually be part of a full herd by the end of 2025, which will include Pak Boon and Tang Mo from Taronga in Sydney and Permai and Putra Mas from Perth.
It is the first time South Australia has had an elephant in a zoo since the death of Samorn at Monarto in 1994.
SAPOL is teaming up with Zoos SA to help Burma move to her new home.
Officers will be escorting the heavy vehicle transporting the elephant from the airport, through the metropolitan area and along the Southeastern Freeway. The predicted time of departure from the airport is about 5pm.
The tunnels will be reduced to one lane to accommodate the truck whilst moving through, so motorists are being told to expect delays. The truck will be traveling at a lower speed limit, especially as it will be peak hour traffic on Glen Osmond Road.
Once moved in, Burma will go into 30-day quarantine.
