A recent fruit fly outbreak in northeastern Adelaide has had devastating impacts on a popular provider of local produce.

The Adelaide Hills Berry Farm in Uraidla are choosing to destroy their entire season’s worth of produce, as they can’t sell their product outside of the 15km quarantine zone without using specified chemicals designated by PIRSA.

The owners have refused to fumigate their berries with methyl bromide, instead stating they solely rely on biological pest controls.

The owners estimate the cost to be around $250,000.

PIRSA says the quarantine restrictions will be lifted by May 9 if no further cases are detected.
