Two rare comic books recently sold at a UK auction for prices well above expectations. The highlight was Superman #1, which fetched £97,890 (approximately $189,089 Aus!), far exceeding its starting price of £20,000. This iconic comic, listed as number three on Overstreet’s Top 100 Golden Age Comics, was purchased by an Australian buyer.

Superman #1, released in 1939, was the first comic dedicated to a single character. Written by Jerry Siegel and illustrated by Joe Shuster, it retells Superman’s origin story and features the first-ever fan letters column by DC. This landmark issue set the stage for modern superhero comics.

Another notable sale was Batman #1, which garnered £31,375, (over $60,000 Aus) significantly higher than its £5,000 starting price. Released in 1939, this comic marked Batman’s first self-titled publication and introduced iconic villains like the Joker and Catwoman.
